Sailing (Fleet Racing)
Sailing (fleet racing) was
introduced to IRAUG as an exchange and training opportunity in 2009 and since then
various international relationships have been formed. The 2011 Games will see
sailing being added to the sports program on a competition basis.
Mastering the art of sailing requires experience in varying wind and
sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats themselves and local
knowledge with regards the area one is sailing in.
In most countries people enjoy sailing as a sport
or recreational activity. Recreational sailing or yachting can be divided into racing
and cruising.
Throughout
history, sailing has been instrumental in the development of civilisation,
affording mankind greater mobility and capacity for fishing, trade, and
warfare. The earliest representation of a ship under sail appears on a painted
disc found in Kuwait
dating to the late 5th millennium BC. Advances in sailing technology from the Middle
Ages onward enabled Arab, Chinese, Indian and European explorers to make longer
voyages into regions with extreme weather and climatic conditions, due to improvements
in sails, masts and rigging and navigation equipment. The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Championships are being held in Perth at the same time as the 2011 Indian Rim Asian University Games (IRAUG). This presents students competing in IRAUG with not only the unique opportunity to sail the picturesque waters of the Swan River, but to also witness the Sailing World Championships and see master sailors at work. 2011 Divisions: Open | SPORT | TEAM SQUAD SIZE MAX | MIN REQUIRED TO TAKE FIELD |
